Diamond & Caldor Railway

The History

The Diamond & Caldor Railway was incorporated as a "Common Carrier" in 1903. While the D&C was intended to be primarily a logging railroad, the common carrier status, permitted it to offer passenger and freight service to the public. This common carrier status also insured public recognition that a number of other logging railroads in California did not have.

The above map, excerpted from the "1926 Edition of the Official Railroad Map of California" shows the Diamond & Caldor, Camino Placerville & Lake Tahoe Rly, and part of the Southern Pacific Railroad. All of these railroads were common carriers. A number of other logging railroads, such as the West Side, were never so recognized, as they did not have common carrier status.
